PSYCHIATRIC NURSES ASSOCIATION of Ireland

Dear Colleagues

You will be aware of the note from Bernard Gloster CEO of the HSE issued this week re Performance Achievement ( PA). In the note the CEO refers to Professional Development Planning (PDP) for Nurses ( see text below). You will also recall the a presentation on Professional Development Planning was given at our Annual Delegate Conference by Dr Deirdre Mulligan earlier this year.

I wish to clarify the Unions position on both PA & PDP. The PNA formed part of a group of stakeholders convened in 2022 to review the Professional Development Plan for Nursing previously launched in 2018. The purpose of this engagement was to align PDP to PA for the Nursing Profession. In plain terms PA forms part of the Public Service Pay Deal, in the case of nursing it is now agreed that PDP is the PA process for the Nursing Profession. This agreement has been reached through engagement and collaboration with national HR, NMBI and the Nursing Trade Unions.

This requires that nurses engage with their line managers using the PDP framework at least once annually. The PDP Information Guide is available to download and also support information on the Resources section of the digital PDP hub ( https://pdp.hseland.ie/).

I am aware through the offices of the ONMSD, a number of information sessions are currently in train, and are a useful forum to learn about the PDP resource and roll out .

Yours Sincerely
