PSYCHIATRIC NURSES ASSOCIATION of Ireland

The National Chairman and the Officer Board are delighted to join with the General Secretary in announcing that Mr Seamus Murphy’s tireless work and professionalism for the Association has been recognised by his appointment to the new post of Deputy General Secretary.
This also reflects the growth and expansion of the Association, due in no small part to Seamus.
The Deputy General Secretary has had a long and storied history with the PNA, from his time as a student nurse in Clonmel, when he joined the fledging union, at that point battling on many fronts for recognition.
Seamus was lucky to be joining such a vibrant branch of the Association and he went on to serve his work colleagues as both Branch Secretary and Branch Chairman.
Seamus developed a significant national profile and served the Association on the Officer Board as both Trustee and National Chairman, gaining valuable insight to the workings of Trade Unions and the Health Services. He was a member of the board of An Bord Altranais for six years.
Mentioned as a mould breaker, Seamus became the PNA’s first Industrial Relations Officer in1997.
Coupled with Des Kavanagh, they made a dynamic team which has benefited nurses the length and breadth of the country and now he has broken the mould again, becoming the Unions first Deputy General Secretary, further demonstrating how he has developed his role since becoming a full time Union Official.
Des Kavanagh commented on news of the appointment, “I think I speak for the whole Association when I say that this appointment has been well earned and is richly deserved. We look forward to Seamus’ continuing rich contribution to the continuing development of all aspects of the Association.  On behalf of all of us I extend our congratulations and best wishes to Seamus, his wife Joan and children Siobhán and Ian.
